The ticket booking website and app for British rock band Coldplay crashed on Sunday due to overwhelming demand for their upcoming concert in Mumbai. The concert, part of their “Music of the Spheres” tour, is scheduled for January 19-20, 2025, at the D.Y. Patil Stadium.
The booking window opened at noon, but heavy traffic caused the BookMyShow platform to crash almost immediately. When booking resumed shortly after, the user traffic was reported to be around 1 million. To manage the high demand, BookMyShow announced a new line system, limiting each user to a maximum of four tickets instead of the previous limit of eight.
Despite these measures, many users took to social media to voice their frustrations regarding ticket booking difficulties. In response to the massive interest, Coldplay announced an additional concert, extending their stay in India by adding a third show on January 21, 2025. The band shared this update on their social media, thanking fans for their enthusiasm.
After the site crashed, the ticket window for the new concert opened at 2 PM. Users were instructed to select the “Book Now” option at 1:30 PM to enter a waiting room. When the ticket window went live, traffic surged to 1.4 million users, and many fans were unable to secure tickets due to the high demand.
Ticket prices for the concert range from ₹25,000 to ₹35,000, with the most expensive lounge tickets priced at ₹35,000. Reports indicate that resale prices for these tickets could reach between ₹300,000 to ₹1 million. Fans were also warned about fraudulent websites attempting to sell tickets, with BookMyShow advising caution through their official social media channels.
Coldplay last performed in India in 2016 at the Golden Citizen Festival in Mumbai, attracting around 80,000 fans, including numerous Bollywood celebrities. Now, after nine years, the band is set to return. Coldplay’s songs like “Hymn for the Weekend,” “Yellow,” and “Fix You” have gained immense popularity in India.
Formed in London in 1997, Coldplay consists of members Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, Will Champion, and Phil Harvey. The band has won seven Grammy Awards out of 39 nominations, cementing their status as one of the leading rock bands in the world.
