In Kolkata, a court has extended the judicial custody of Sanjay Roy, the main suspect in the murder and rape case of a 31-year-old doctor, for an additional 14 days. Roy, who was arrested on August 9, appeared in Sealdah court where the extension of his remand was granted.
The court’s decision comes as doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital continue their protest, refusing to return to their duties at the outpatient department (OPD). They are demanding justice for their murdered colleague and increased safety measures at their workplace.
On the same day, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation of alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is also handling the ongoing murder and rape investigation. The CBI is preparing to conduct polygraph tests on Roy, the hospital’s former principal Sandip Ghosh, and five other hospital staff.
A group of ten medics visited the CBI office to urge for a faster investigation. They expressed frustration over the lack of visible progress and voiced concerns that criminals may still be present around the hospital.
The protesting doctors have planned a mass convention for Saturday to decide their next steps. They are receiving support from civic body employees in their calls for justice and safer conditions for women.
Despite appeals from state health officials, including Health Principal Narayan Swaroop Nigam, for doctors to return to work, the junior medics have vowed to continue their strike until their demands are met. The parents of the murdered doctor have also expressed their willingness to join the ongoing protests to strengthen the call for justice and safety.
