Record-Breaking Day in Chennai Test: Gill and Pant Shine

The third day of the Chennai Test between India and Bangladesh was historic, with several records shattered. Shubman Gill scored his fifth Test century, making him the leading century-maker in international cricket since 2022. He also completed his 100th six across all formats.

In another highlight, Rishabh Pant made a comeback to Test cricket after a year and a half, scoring a century and equalling MS Dhoni’s record of six Test centuries.

Key Records from Day Three of the Test

  1. Shubman Gill’s Milestone:
    • Gill scored his third century in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, having previously scored two against England earlier this year. He is now at the top among Indian players for the most centuries in this WTC cycle, alongside Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who also have three each.
    • Overall, Rohit Sharma leads with nine Test centuries in the WTC, while Gill follows with five. Rishabh Pant has four, along with Mayank Agarwal and Virat Kohli.
  2. International Success:
    • With his latest century, Gill has now scored 10 international centuries in 2023 alone, making him the highest century-maker among Indians in the past two years. Following him are Virat Kohli with eight and Rohit Sharma with seven.
    • Since 2022, Gill has amassed 12 international centuries, placing him at the top. Pakistan’s Babar Azam and England’s Joe Root follow closely with 11 each, while Kohli has 10.
  3. Century of Sixes:
    • At just 25 years old, Shubman Gill reached 100 sixes in international cricket by hitting two sixes against Bangladesh. He now ranks fourth among Indian players for most sixes before the age of 25, behind Suresh Raina, Rishabh Pant, and Sachin Tendulkar.
  4. Rishabh Pant’s Return:
    • Pant scored 109 runs, marking his sixth Test century. He has now equalled MS Dhoni’s record for the most centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper, achieving this in just 34 matches compared to Dhoni’s 90.
    • In the WTC, Pant has scored four centuries, making him the leading century-maker among wicketkeepers in this competition. Bangladesh’s Litton Das and Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan follow with three each.
  5. KL Rahul’s Achievement:
    • KL Rahul contributed 22 runs off 19 balls in the second innings, bringing his international runs to a total of 8,000. He achieved this milestone in his 200th match. His runs are distributed as 2,901 in Tests, 2,851 in ODIs, and 2,265 in T20s.
