On Friday, the Supreme Court of India responded to controversial statements made by a Karnataka High Court judge during a hearing. Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud directed the Registrar General of the Karnataka High Court to submit a report within two weeks regarding Judge Vedavyasachar Shirishanand’s remarks.
The Chief Justice sought assistance from Attorney General R. Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, indicating that some basic guidelines might be issued on this matter.
The situation escalated after video clips of Judge Shirishanand went viral on social media. In one clip, he referred to a Muslim area in western Bengaluru as “Pakistan.” In another clip, he reprimanded a female lawyer, suggesting she might next reveal the color of the opposing counsel’s underwear, which sparked widespread criticism.
Following the video’s circulation, the Karnataka High Court warned against the misuse of live-streamed court proceedings. They issued a disclaimer stating that recording any proceedings without permission is prohibited. Violators may face legal consequences.
The court’s message emphasized that no individual, organization, or media platform is allowed to record, share, or publish live-streamed court activities without prior permission.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about the conduct of judges and the appropriate use of technology in court settings, prompting the Supreme Court to take a closer look at judicial conduct and guidelines for court proceedings.
